What to expect

Whether you have attended church all your life or have never been at all, we know that it is not easy visiting a church for the first time. As you prepare to visit with us, we want to answer some questions you might have, so that you can have the best experience possible.

What kind of church is The Colchester Mission & Headgate Baptist Church?

We are a group of people who have believed on Jesus Christ for salvation and forgiveness of sins. We desire to follow the teachings of the Bible and to share the gospel and love of Christ with the world. We are an independent church holding to historic Baptist principles. We believe in teaching the Bible verse by verse. We believe in worshipping God through singing Christ-honouring hymns and choruses. We strive to make everyone who attends or visits feel welcome and comfortable. You can find out more about what we believe here.

When are the services?

We gather each Sunday at 11.00 am for a time of worship that includes congregational singing, Scripture reading, and Bible preaching. Our Bible study during the week is on Tuesdays at 7.30 pm. Everyone is welcome to join us for these studies which allow for discussion and questions.

What should I wear?

We would suggest that when coming to the Lord’s house believers should wear their best. However there is no pressure regarding this as we believe that this must come from an individual’s personal conviction and their desire to honour God.

How do I get there?

The Colchester Mission is currently meeting at Headgate House, above ‘NC News’, 3 Headgate Colchester, CO1 1NU.

What about parking?

If coming by car, parking on the surrounding streets is limited so we recommend using Butt Road Car Park or St Mary’s Multi-Storey Car Park.

What happens when I arrive?

As you arrive, you should see one of our greeters, who will answer any questions you might have. If you arrive a few minutes early, you will be able to find your seat and meet some of our members before the service starts.

What is a service like?

During the services, we will do our best not to point you out or make you feel uncomfortable in any way. Each service lasts about 75-90 minutes and includes a time of prayer, singing hymns and choruses, Scripture reading, and Bible preaching. After the service, feel free to speak to one of our leaders if you have any questions about the teaching.

What about my children?

Children are welcome to attend all the services. Please don’t feel stressed about bringing your children. We have children as well, and we enjoying having them join us for the service.

Is there a Sunday School?

YES – There is Sunday School for the children during our 11am service. This is very interactive and they will definitely leave church having learnt more about God’s Holy Word.

Will I be asked to donate money when I visit?

We believe that giving is a responsibility and privilege for Christians, so, as part of our service, we will mention the offering which is collected via a box at the back of the hall. You are welcome to give in the collection, but the collection is primarily for our members and regular attendees. Guests should not feel under any obligation to participate.
